 Veranda Chair

Project Duration: 6 weeks, IndividualTools: Woodworking, Prototyping, Soft Fabrication
I set out to design a wide, deep chair to sink into while drinking coffee and people watching on my porch in Pittsburgh.

The chair was inspired by the classic Adirondack Chair. As I was studying in Denmark, Scandinavian principals are prevalant in the design.

❷ Flat Pack
The chair can be assembled easily using threaded inserts and bolts. This enables easy transportation and shipping and cost efficiency.

❸ Ideation
We were challenged to be completely analogue in our design process. Developing my ideas through sketches and models.

❹ Construction

The chair was constructed over the course of two weeks using White Ash and Duck Canvas.
Full Scale Model.
I had to make it in CAD to make sure.
Wiping off excess glue.

Initially I used a danish soap finish on the chair.

❺ Refinement

At some point in its lifetime, a pillow moved from my couch to my chair, greatly improving the ergonomics.
As a result, I added a dart and a pillow to the chair back.

While I was at it, I decided to refinish the surface with Odie’s Oil. The soap didn’t protect the wood as much as I would have liked it to, and I was excited to try a hardwax finish.
