 Convertible Bike Bag

Project Duration: 6 weeks Advisor: Stephen Stadelmeier, CMU Tools: Soft Fabrication, Leatherworking↗ , Prototyping, Cycling

I often find myself wanting to bike with a bag, but not wanting it on my person. Bungee cords and racks don’t always cut it, so I set out to make a bag that can attach to both your body and your bike.

My solution features 2.5L of storage space, an adjustable sling strap and 2 lash tabs in a rain-proof enclosure.

❷ Ideation
Sketching was key in determining the features, proportions and placement of the bag.

I opted to design an inner frame bag because of its universality across different bikes, meaning no need for rivnuts, racks or specific handlebars.

❸ Prototyping

Prototyping was key in my design process. Working through paper models and testing the production methods led me to the final solution.

Testing security and fit on a friend’s bike.
A crude but important step in the bag’s development.
